Plymouth Sound, Drakes Island, Drakes Channel PDF Print E-mail

During the summer months, May to September, this becomes one of the best Saltwater fly-fishing areas in the country. With access to a boat you can follow the massed shoals of Mackrel. Any standard trout rod with an intermediate line and streamer style teams of flies results in action packed condensed fishing fun.

Amongst the mackrel are good numbers of Sea Bass, although it is to be noted that within the Tamer you have to return these when fishing from a boat as it is a designated nursery area.

Drifting over the submarine defences between Drakes Island and cawsand enables you to catch plentiful pollack in the 1-3ib size with the occassional larger speciemen.

Herring, garpike and pouting also turn up in what is an interesting and rewarding saltwater mark.

From the shore the rocks around Devil's Point provide a good chance of intercepting these shoals particularly on an evening ebb tide when the massive shoals stream past you close in on their way out of the Tamar.
